RM25: Cinnamon

My picture of Cinnamon that I drew for the Rockman 25th anniversary collaboration. (WARNING! Image heavy!)

Alia was my first choice as the cute blonde I wanted to draw for the collab, since I was too late to dib her last year. It was only after translating the Korean comments that I realized someone had already snagged her first again. ARRRGH! Still, Cinnamon makes for a wonderful alternative and I like the way this one turned out. It's a shame all the trouble surrounding the collab means that there won't be another one next year, because I definitely feel up for more of this. :)

Spiritus Ex Machina Revised

Here's my entry for Archie's Mega Man contest. The idea of doing Egyptian paintings for Pharaoh Man is a concept I've had since the Mega Man Tribute that I never got around to drawing. I was about to let it slide when Archie announced their contest, and I thought that Pharaoh Man retelling his role in the fourth volume "Spiritus Ex Machina" would be the perfect context to resurrect the idea.

For those who haven't read the story arc, here's a recap. It was just another ordinary day for mild-mannered Pharaoh Man accompanying Dr. Cossack and his daughter Kalinka to the Robotics Trade Show. He met new robot friends like Mega Man, Roll and Quake Woman, who immediately admired him for his power and good looks. Suddenly, the evil Emerald Spears gang led by the diabolical Xander Payne took control of the show and captured the humans. Although Mega Man and Quake Woman were terrified, Pharaoh Man roused them to action and lead a charge against the Emerald Spears to save their masters.

Sensing the battle lost, Xander Payne took a cowardly escape by detonating explosives he had placed around the building, burying Pharoah Man's friends. Never one to lose heart, the heroic Pharaoh Man used his superhuman strength to clear the debris and rescue those trapped. And so the day was saved with no loss of life, Dr. Cossack was crowned champion roboticist for his creation, and Pharaoh Man had won the hearts of his adoring fans.

And that's what really happened, folks.

Just a quickie I made for RockMiyabi's Shades of Ashe and Grey contest. The idea is to draw Ashe and Grey blushing for Valentine's Day. It's a simple idea, but I kinda like how the composition turned out in this one. And this is coming from a guy with weak shipping skills. :p

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Donkey Kong model sheet

Another model sheet! This one is a commission for :iconran-blue:

Who doesn't love this big guy? The DKC series are some of my favourite platformers and I still play them even today. Since Donkey Kong is a 3D character to begin with, it's easier to imagine how his squat, bulky physique will look animated. As with my other model sheets, I did my best to keep the different viewpoints aligned and symmetrical for modelling purposes, although DK's hands look a little bigger in profile because of the perspective.

This is a Mega Man X commission for :iconlordfoot-in-mouth:

He asked me to draw a humanized Alia and Berkana on a Ride Chaser in biker gear. While the concept sounded exciting, I often found myself struggling with this painting and falling behind. I had a bad first attempt after I realized the perspective and posture were ass, so I redrew the whole thing from a lower viewpoint. Unfortunately, it was difficult to reconcile the angle with the lighting in this image, but I compensated for it by going all-out on a rainbow of colour. Hey, I play to my strengths! In the end, I like how this one turned out. :)

Cry in the Dark

This image is inspired by the events that unfolded in Sonic #239. As part of Eggman's twisted plot, Mecha Sally was sent to assassinate her brother Elias in Feral Forest. Fortunately, Sonic, Tails and Amy arrived to save the village and allow Elias, Meg and baby Alexis to escape. Only in this image, Eggman had sent Mecha Sally a little early for a night op, and this time there are no Team Fighters to stop her..... :o

--------------------------------------------

To be frank, this painting is more of an expression of my frustration with the Mecha Sally story arc. Ever since Sally was roboticized, Sonic's efforts to rescue her have been a tiresome and repetitive affair. In the past year, not once did it seem like he was close to getting her back. Mostly it was because Team Fighters never even had a plan to deroboticize her, and as much was stated in issue #246. But you know what the worst part is? Sally's personal experience as Eggman's roboticized slave was never addressed!

(WARNING! Rant to follow! You can skip to the last paragraph if you like...)

Ever since I had a discussion with TCH2 on my "Goodbye, Sally" pic, I've been wondering if Eggman would ever force Sally to kill. He did send Sally after Elias, but the sibling tension was always cut short by Sonic's intervention, and we never got to see if any remaining spark of Sally's soul would manifest at the crucial moment. The lack of any insight into Sally's mental state is what makes the story so frustrating. The only time Archie have even bothered to mention it is in an editorial reply in issue #240:

"Sally's inner turmoil due to her robotization is sorta hinted at here and there, but we haven't yet gotten a clear picture of what kind of struggle the poor princess is actually experiencing - it at all!"

And that, dear readers, is as close as Archie has ever come to addressing the topic: a reply to a concerned fan mail. Unbelievable. To make matters worse, Sally is often gone for months at a time while Sonic and friends are off saving God knows what. The last arc "Endangered Species" is one of the most pointless things I have read in the comic since Ian Flynn came on board. It felt like something that should be reserved for the defunct Knuckles spin-off, not another hurdle to delay Sonic from his mission.

These constant obstacles are a cynical attempt to draw out the chase and puts Sally further out of reach. In fact, the comic has been maddeningly ignorant in dealing with a lot of key characters. We still have no definitive status on Bunnie or the alleged death of Hershey, we don't know what's happening with Naugus' possession of Geoffrey, we have no idea how Antoine's recuperating, we haven't seen whether Dimitri can be a valuable source on Dark Legion intel. Heck, we haven't even seen much of Team Freedom either, which would at least give the comic some fresh material to show on the home front instead of another repetitive outing with Sonic. Many fans believe that Archie are cutting back on the SatAM cast, and I'm starting to agree given the infuriatingly dismissive attitude they're taking with the core cast. And with the Mega Man crossover coming up, it looks like only Sega's characters will be featured.

But getting back on topic, I had to do something to express my main concern over the point Archie has ignored the longest: Sally's "inner turmoil". It's imagery like this that I believe shows more tension than the entire Mecha Sally arc to date, and I wish Archie would take notes. More importantly, I wonder how this experience will affect her. Other deroboticized Mobians have lived on peacefully, but they were merely workers and not soldiers. Sally has been forced to hurt her friends and may yet kill, but what will happen after she's deroboticized? If she's anything like Uncle Chuck, she's probably aware of what's happening.
If you have any thoughts or wishes on Sally's presence of mind, write them in the comments. What's going to happen to her? :(

See Through Your Eyes

This is just a quickie of Nicole I threw together today. In case you can't tell, it's inspired by a story that happened in a certain issue. Can you guess which one?

.....

............

....................

..............................

If you said "Sonic #1", you'd be wrong! It's actually based on the story "Circuit Me" from Sonic #146 - in my opinion the WORST story in the history of Sonic comics! :angered:

(WARNING: Another rant! You can skip to the bottom if you wish.)

A quick recap for those who haven't read it: Sally is visiting Rotor in his lab when she trips over some wires and switches bodies with Nicole. (Don't ask.) Nicole manages to take about ten steps out the door to marvel the world before the effect wears off and she switches back. And those five pages represent the full extent of the story!

So why do I feel this is the worst Sonic story? I'm sure many of you can name worse ones like some of the inane antics from the very early issues or Sonic's misadventures through space. But this story just annoyed me to no end because it takes a brilliant concept and exhausts it before you can bat an eyelash. Granted, the body switching trope is nothing new in fiction. There are literally hundreds of series where the idea has been used before, and I always enjoy them because they open new venues for humour, awkwardness, romance, existentialism, drama, and the best one: character development. Probably at the top of my list would be the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Body and Soul" where the Doctor inhabits Seven of Nine's body and discovers the thrills of human sensation. It's a close example to how the artificial being Nicole inhabits Sally's body, and the highlights of the episode just threw into contrast everything Circuit Me lacked.

Simply put, five pages is nowhere near enough to do the Sally/Nicole swap justice. That is a story that could have filled a four issue arc in itself! This is the first time that Nicole has experienced what it's like to live among Mobians, and it served as the embryo for her holographic form. There is just soooooo much potential for character development showing Nicole experiencing her first sensations and how she interacts with other characters in physical form. Even simple things like eating a meal or feeling the wind or just enjoying life with others can offer unseen opportunities for expression in a character who was previously just a faceless automaton.

How she relates to Sonic in Sally's body would be one of the key themes of the story, which was only barely touched upon in Circuit Me in the super-condensed final page. Not forgetting the other half, there's also plenty of opportunity to show things from Sally's perspective, stuck in a Gameboy and coping with being an invalid of sorts. So many questions arise: Would Nicole try to explore the full extent of her sensations through Sonic? Would she be called upon in a fight? Would Sally force Nicole back into her handheld form? What kind of effect would that have on Nicole after having experienced so much? This concept is just bursting with storytelling goodness that was squandered in a mere five pages. Now that Nicole has her own holographic body, it's unlikely this plot device will ever be visited again.

I truly despise Circuit Me because of what it wastes. I feel Nicole is underutilised in the comics, and I refer again to the Doctor from Star Trek, whose holographic form offered different approaches to exploration, technology and even combat, but always developed his love of arts to establish his humanity. Most of the time Nicole is treated like the city janitor or Harvey Who's toolkit, but Circuit Me just epitomizes how badly writers can mishandle her character. (Oh, and Al Bigley's art sucks too.)
If you have a Sonic story you absolutely cannot stand, write it in the comments!

Commission: Sonic Steampunk

This is a commission for :iconmarioking89:

He asked me to draw a cover for his fan comic "Sonic Steampunk" in the same vein as Sonic #226, which in turn is based on the original Sonic game for Genesis. The commission was one of the most demanding I've worked on yet because of how elaborate the background needed to be. I've never painted a steampunk image before, so it was quite a fun challenge trying to convey that style with a golden palette. As far as I know, anything looks steampunk if you add enough pipes and gears all over the shop. :p

You can see the full cover with the title by marioking89 on his gallery, and be sure to watch him closely for updates if this pic has whet your appetite for some steampunky goodness. :)

Feeling the Heat

Psst! Psst! Psst! What could Midna be whispering in Link's ear? Maybe she sees something familiar in that fire demon. Maybe she's telling Link to pay attention to its glowing forehead. Or maybe she's purring some honey sweet talk at her dashing hero for all you Link/Midna shippers. Hey, I'm sure you can come up with some better dialogue than me. ;)

This one came rather spontaneously and I'm surprised I'm even painting Twilight Princess. I've haven't really played the game that much because I had to use a friend's Wii, but I enjoyed the camaraderie between Link and the mercurial Midna. I can see why she's so popular among Zelda fans, and I wanted to depict a scene where she's working with Link to fulfil their quest instead of toying with him. I find reflections make for interesting compositions and I hope to use them more often. :)

Happy Easter, everyone!

It's finished at last! Two years after I drew my Thundercats WIP, I finally got around to colouring this monster. I started working on it before the show aired and finished it after the show was cancelled. Do I rule or what? :p As a result, I had to base the drawing on promo clips for the pilot episode. The cast are still in their original clothes and Panthro appears in the form of a disguised Mumm-ra. Background characters include the gang that mugs Lion-O and the bloke the Thunderkittens rob.

Words cannot express how hard it was to colour this and it's no wonder I waited two years before making the attempt. Not only did I need more experience points first, but I had to wait for a newer version of openCanvas for smoother painting. Even so, achieving a dynamic colour shift from orange on the left to blue on the right was tremendously tricky for such a detailed background, and I suffered a bad false start that forced me to recolour the city. I came as close to giving up as I ever have on a painting, but I was bloody-minded enough to see this through to the end. It's become one of my most elaborate pieces to date, clocking in at over 100'000 strokes (an average painting is 20'000 strokes).

Before Thundercats aired, I predicted I would end up drawing heaps of fan art based on it. Alas, that prediction never came to pass. I don't know if or when I'll do more Thundercats fan art, but if I only make one piece dedicated to such a great show, I'm glad this is it. Thundercats - HO!

Here's a quick gift pic I made for longtime fan :iconr-o-x-a-s:
I asked her what she would like me to draw and she replied, "Dynamo being his usual awesome self!" So here's Dynamo in front of the Enigma cannon. Awesome as usual. ;)

Believe it or not, this is my first time drawing Dynamo in eleven years! The last such instance was in my Not Another Mega Man Game collage. That pic seems rather ironic today.
